The Puritan Widow is an Early Modern comedy that pokes fun at the actions of an overly zealous Puritan widow and her family. Her dead husband amassed a great fortune by cheating and stealing from all his clients.  The family happily enjoy the ill-gotten wealth in spite of their supposed religiosity.  This satiric comedy makes fun of hypocrisy in all its forms, with special attention given to those who use religion as a means to worldly ends, ignoring the “golden rule” to “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Its comedy points out that cloaking oneself in religion as a cover to prey upon others is antithetical to the purpose of praying.

When first printed in 1607, the play was ascribed to W.S. and initially many believed that William Shakespeare was the author. However, most modern scholars agree that Thomas Middleton is the actual author of the play.

The Puritan Widow will be performed by The Apocryphal Shakespeare Company at The Mabel Kay Senior Center, 24 Walnut St., Haddonfield, NJ on Sunday October 27th at 2:00pm, doors open at 1:30. Admission is free!
