Hojalata, or tin art, is a folk art tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation throughout Latin America. Colored and embossed tin has been used to make playful decorations as well as sacred symbols for home altars and cathedrals since the 16th century. Punched tin evolved in the 1800s, becoming a popular style for intricate mirror and picture frames. There are examples of both techniques found in Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens.
Students will get to make their own hojalata creations, using coloring, punching, and embossing techniques.
