Program Description

Event Details

Although hair is seen as a symbol of expression for all cultures and for all hair types, Black people, in particular Black women have a rich history with hair beginning in Africa.

Throughout the years, hair has been used as a tool of systemic violence in America against people of African descent who have been socially penalized and stigmatized for their hair in American society.  Today, hair discrimination policies exist to ameliorate these penalties, and present legal pathways for those who experience racial discrimination due to their hair.

Join Dr. Patti O’Brien-Richardson, Associate Professor, Health Researcher, and Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer at the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University, New Brunswick for a presentation on hair discrimination.
